Muhammad Asyraf Bin Chumino

Being the eldest among his siblings, Muhammad Asyraf Bin Chumino made a big sacrifice for his family. At 10, he dropped out of school to start working to support his widowed mother, who was then suffering from depression, while his sister pursued her Secondary education and his brother sat for PSLE that year.

Today, the 20 year-old is an inspiration to many. Asyraf was an award recipient of the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Model Student Award. With grit and sheer determination, the well-mannered student had also received the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Special Achievement, with the most recent being a Gold Medal for the Sng Yew Chong Award, one of the top graduate awards in ITE.

It was a long road the success indeed. Two years after his mother got better, Asyraf made a life changing decision to return to school. However, without a PSLE certificate, he had not much of a choice. He enrolled in a Work Skills Programme by Mendaki in 2007, to learn basic numeracy and literacy over the next two years. He then applied for Northlight where he was accepted into Secondary 3 after an entrance exam. His accolade collection begins with the attainment of the Outstanding Pupil Award from Northlight School.

Asyraf is now pursuing a Diploma in Hotel & Leisure Facilities at Singapore Polytechnic after completing a Nitec in Facility Technology in College East with a high GPA of 3.9. Despite his tight schedule in the Polytechnic, Asyraf still makes time to give back to the community. Asyraf intends to be a volunteer Mentor in Mendaki to help and motivate students who are in his shoes once upon a time.
