ITE College East’s first and second year Sport Management students competed in the first ever wrestling charity event to be held in Singapore on 7th and 8th of November 2009. This Chinatrust Charity Event, Kings and Queens Of The Mat 2009, was organized by the Wrestling Federation of Singapore to promote wrestling as a sport in Singapore, and to clarify the misconceptions that wrestling is related to jumping from a top rope onto your opponent and to the Ultimate Fighting Competition. The competition was based on modified Sumo rules with the main emphasis on fun. Each participant had to push their opponent out of the wrestling mat area without lifting their opponent off the mat.
With no previous experience in wrestling competitions, the Sport Management team of 27 students performed exceptionally well to win gold medals in the following weight categories:
| Women <50kg |
Siti Aminah Bte Ghazali |
| Women <60kg |
Hallejah Bte Raship |
| Women <70kg |
April Min Qi Kong |
| Men <74kg |
Wei Lin Jerome |
| Men <84kg |
Tirmidzi B Zaninul |
| Open |
Haikhal Bin Adam |
The winning Sport Management team walked away with a $4,000 cheque, of which $2,000 was donated to a Charity of their choice, and $2,000 dollars was contributed to the Sport Management Department of the School of Business and Services.
Following the success of this event, the Singapore Wrestling Federation will be holding a yearly event to see who can be the next KING AND QUEEN OF THE MAT!
