Launch of South East CDC Community Mental Wellness Play at ITE College East

By Ms Elaine Chua, Head, Student Care, Student Care Centre, College Services Division

Grey Matters, a play by TheatreWorks and organised by South East Community Development Council (CDC) was performed at ITE College East on 8 Feb 2017. This was attended by 400 Nursing students. The play tells a story about the common challenges faced by young people such as stress, sadness and at the same time gives new perspectives in coping strategies for reflection.

While we are familiar with physical illnesses and injuries, we often forget that our mental health needs to be taken care of as well. The play featured the journey of Damien, who faced the stresses of adjusting to major changes in his life, such as failing a test, fulfilling his leadership role in his CCAs and living up to the expectations of his family, friends and teachers. Damien neglected his mental health and when it became too much for him to handle, he opened a mental first aid kit that he found under his table in the classroom. The mental first aid kit introduced to the audience useful coping strategies.

Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Mayor of South East District graced the occasion.
