Broadband Technology & Services Centre
Set up in Jan 2013, the Broadband Technology & Services Centre (BTSC) at ITE College East is designed to provide students with an authentic learning environment, integrating industry-centric curriculum framework to support the training of Nitec in Electronics, Computer Networking & Communications and Nitec in Electronics (Broadband Technology & Services)
The centre emulates the real world environment of the telecommunications industry which includes Triple Play Service Provider, Central Office, Outside Plant and the Customer Premises. The centre is designed to motivate students to learn in rich, relevant and real-world contexts so that our graduates will be work-ready in an ever changing job landscape.
The centre is designed to develop the following salient skill sets for our graduates:
- Network Medium Termination
- Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) System Installation
- Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) System Management
- Broadband Service Activation
- Broadband Network Services Maintenance, Repair and Troubleshooting
The desired skill sets are achieved in different zones of training:
|Network Medium Termination
Students are trained through task-based activities on setting up of optical medium, right from the network planning to termination of optical medium.
|Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) System Installation
Students will take on the higher level roles of FTTx specialist or field supervisor to experience the process of setting up the optical communication system and provide solutions from the Central Office (CO) to the customer premises.
|Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) System Management
Students are trained on system configurations, network management and monitoring to support the broadband network services. In addition, students will learn to detect, diagnose and resolve network performance problems and outages.
|Broadband Service Activation
Students will take on the roles of a FTTH specialist to provide broadband access network solutions to customer to achieve quality broadband service activation and commissioning.
|Broadband Network Services Maintenance, Repair and Troubleshooting
Students will learn how to perform test and measurement, fault log entry and proper repair documentation. Dedicated test and measurement equipment are used to carry out further investigation to confirm the diagnostic so as to perform the necessary repair.
